The Amigos formed in 1962, during New Mexico’s golden anniversary, when 85 leading citizens chartered an aircraft and visited Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, New York, and Washington, DC, to draw attention to New Mexico’s 50 years as a state. Soon after, they created a permanent organization chartered as a private corporation.
The New Mexico Amigos were founded with a simple but powerful purpose: to bring together distinguished leaders from across our state who share a commitment to representing New Mexico with pride, integrity, and goodwill. Since our founding, the Amigos have served as informal ambassadors for New Mexico — fostering relationships, building connections, and elevating the image of our state across the nation.
What began as a small circle of civic and business leaders has grown into a respected statewide institution.
1962 — Present
A legacy of leadership passed from one generation of Amigos to the next, united in representing the Land of Enchantment with dignity and goodwill.
Over the decades, members of the Amigos have represented New Mexico in countless settings, strengthening partnerships and promoting the culture, economy, and spirit of our state. Though the world has changed, our mission has remained constant: to unite influential New Mexicans who are dedicated to advancing the interests and reputation of the Land of Enchantment.
As a new generation of leaders joins the organization, the Amigos look forward to continuing the legacy of goodwill established by the members who came before. Our traditions remain strong, but our mission continues to evolve — shaped by the people, communities, and opportunities that make New Mexico exceptional.
The Amigos have a long history worth preserving — and an even brighter future ahead.
